Operation: Kid EquipViews: 898 About Us
Approximatley 30 million American children are from low-income families. Nearly 6 million live in extreme poverty where purchasing and paying for the bare necessities are a challenge, or they don't know where their next meal will come from. More than 900,000 children in Michigan come from low-income families. Even more perplexing is the estimation that over 170,000 Michigan households are food insecure - lacking the money to obtain adequate food and/or having to skip a meal to get by. After all of the bills are paid, many families are left with very little money to buy anything else, much less school supplies for their children. Studies and firsthand teacher experience suggest that students without basic school materials experience lower test scores, attendance issues and psychosocial issues at school and home. We believe that a child's academic achievement should not be constrained by their family financial (in)abilities. Operation: Kid Equip's goal is to help improve public education and the psychosocial well-being of underprivileged children. We do it through dedication and a very unique mission. The mission of Operation: Kid Equip is to serve the educational needs of children by providing free school supply kits to students from low-income families. Some programs conduct a school supply drive once a year around back-to-school time. At Operation: Kid Equip, school supplies are our primary focus year round. Operation: Kid Equip makes distributions of school supplies in September, and again in January when the most basic school supplies need to be replenished. Our vision is to equip every student with the school supplies needed to learn & succeed in school. We hope to accomplish this through social service delivery capacity building, controlled growth, continuous improvement, and the formation of chapters throughout Michigan and the United States.
