Among some of the high-profile users: Wayne County Executive Robert Ficano, the first to join and establish a page on the website for the county.

"Really, the primary focus of the network is for leaders and their organizations to network with each other," Keith Zendler, the site's creator, said.

Peoplemovers.com had been in beta mode since 2008, but went live during the 2010 Mackinac Policy Conference. The City of Detroit, Motor City Connect, the Detroit Institute of Arts, Macomb County, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Metro Detroit and Motor City Blight Busters are among the groups and organizations that have joined in.

So far, more than 340 groups have linked on the site.

"They essentially create their own online community that they can use to mobilize all their members," Zendler said. "The hope is taking a lot of the mundane communication tasks and making it easier to communicate with each other...and take less time on the task of communication and more time on the goal of communicating."

Connecting online won't diminish some of the more traditional, in-person communication many groups operate by, Zendler said. In fact, he said, "the goal is to give us more quality time in face-to-face relationships."

A Detroit-based social networking website geared toward connecting governments, businesses, nonprofits and residents of metro Detroit officially launched Thursday at the Mackinac Policy Conference.

The goal of the website, www.peoplemovers.com, is to create virtual communities for organizations similar to those for individuals on social networking sites like Facebook and Twitter, according to its founder, Keith Zendler. The goal: to foster regional cooperation.

www.peoplemovers.com, has been in a developmental phase since 2008, and more than 340 groups have joined the social network.

At the website's public launch, Zendler announced that Wayne County and the city of Detroit were officially members of the site.

Zendler, 43, is the founder of Dearborn-based RecycleMax Inc., a waste recycling and disposal service, and Environment Services North America Inc., a recycling and building maintenance firm also based in Dearborn.

Zendler also has served on the board of Central Detroit Christian Community Development Corp. Zendler said that as he worked in community groups, he grew more aware of a disconnect between community stakeholders.

“You had all these leaders, all these organizations out there trying to make their communities better and they just didn't seem to work together very well and they just didn't seem to have the tools to do that,” he said.

The hope, Zendler said, is for Peoplemovers.com to be metro Detroit's platform to raise awareness about regional issues, events and initiatives and to build relationships between regional stakeholders.

Making money wouldn't be a bad thing, either. Zendler said the plan is to generate revenue from ads and corporate sponsorships on the site.

“It's taken every trick in my entrepreneurial bag of tricks to get to this, but it's happening and I'm confident it will be a success,” he said.

"Perhaps the most feedback we've received so far has related to the need to help new users understand how to get started using Peoplemovers" said Keith Zendler, Peoplemovers CEO and Founder.  "Communty Action Steps is our first step in providing some helpful guidance for how a person can start connecting, communicating and cooperating in our network".

Each community home page and landing page has a Community Action Step section that highlights 4 primary features with links to each section.    Peoplemovers plans on providing additional tools like "wizards", video-hosts and user-generated "Action Steps" over the rest of 2010.

Current users of Peoplemovers may need to hit "refresh" to have the new images appear properly.

(Detroit, Michigan, May 8, 2010)  Peoplemovers.com launched today two new features to help organizations with Community 2.0 websites better manage and promote their members.

By going into the Community Roles section of your Profile Admin, the main Admin can now select other users that are Friends to be "Moderators" of the Community.   Moderators will be able to easily log into the account of the community use the "Switch Profile" feature to create posts and update information.   Moderators will NOT have the ability to view or alter the primary account login, password or email settings.

This feature will soon be extended to Groups without Community 2.0 sites!

Community 2.0 sites are also now able to promote their departments, key partners, employees or anyone else they are Friends with by creating a "Featured Member" link in the Quick Links. 

Just go to the Community Settings section and turn the Featured Members function to "Yes", create a custom title ("Key Partners", "Our Employees", etc.) and then go to your Community Roles area to "Feature" them.

They will appear in a special listing when the Quick Link is clicked and also on the Our Community landing page.  You can go to http://www.recyclemax.peoplemovers.com/community to see how it looks!

Spring break vacationing seemed to impact the majority of Metroit Detroit-based websites as their US rankings slipped in our weekly survey of Alexa.com traffic.   Most except for the Detroit Convention & Visitors Bureau which surged from people looking for things to do . . . a good sign for the local economy.

"Despite some big breaking news, like Wayne County making their network live on Peoplemovers.com, we saw an overall drop in use" said Keith Zendler, CEO of Peoplemovers.com "Still, given that so many leaders were taking a needed vacation, this isn't surprising."

While many local sites show strong increases in their Alexa US Rankings, Crain's Detroit Business and Motor City Connect seem to be showing stronger trends upward.
